Donna Kain and Elizabeth Wardle’s article serves to define the concept of an activity theory. It does so by introducing various other concepts such as an activity system. According to the authors, this can be used to analyze and understand specific aspects that influence the way people in a certain group, or system, work together and what tools they use to do so. The article provides a diagram in the form of a triangle that can be used to facilitate our understanding of how the parts of an activity system relate to one another. In short, the subjects of a community share a motive in order to reach a certain outcome. They follow certain rules and divide their work amongst themselves in order to do so. The article also concludes that by understanding an activity system through the activity theory, we are able to see what makes a system work and what doesn’t in the hopes of improving that system.
I can relate to this concept because I have worked in various systems before and have witnessed how the various parts work together. In class for instance, students and teachers work together under the common goal of learning. In RWS, we discuss various readings in order to communicate our thoughts and help each other improve in the class and in our overall writing.
