Research Argument Reflection
A research argument presents a point of view on a certain topic that can be supported and refuted with facts based on research. This assignment was very tedious in the fact that various sources and extensive knowledge on the subject were required in order to successfully present the argument. When approaching this assignment, I initially chose a different topic than the one I ultimately wrote my argument on. While choosing the topic and deciding on my point of view were difficult, I feel I effectively presented my argument and met the criteria completely.
The purpose of this assignment was to develop an understanding of a topic related to our future career or field of study. With my mind set on the field of medicine, I chose the topic of genetic engineering in humans. When approaching this assignment, I chose to gather my research before deciding on my argument. Ultimately, I chose to argue that genetic engineering in humans should be allowed to a certain extent, with government regulations limiting unethical practices. I definitely learned information on the subject that I did not previously know, and this was the most interesting of all the assignments.
The main reading that allowed me to complete my research argument was that of Stuart Greene. In his article, he defined what a research argument is and provided advice on how to approach researching and writing one. By following this advice, I was able to successfully go about understanding my topic and presenting my ideas in regards to it.
